Identification is the unconscious modelling of one's self upon another person's character and behavior. Conscious, intentional imitation is not identification. Identification is an important component of early socialization (learning). In the process of identification, people copy, adopt, and begin to associate themselves with the behavior of others.
In popular culture, identification has come to mean one’s incorporation of some characteristic or quality of another person or group of persons.
