We cannot avoid the use of labels, identities, categories, or entire classification, taxonomic, nomologic, or ontologic systems. Common terms are needed for members of humanitarian, scientific, military, musical, governmental, and health organizations to work cooperatively toward organizational goals.
The labelling of people is usually intended as pejorative judgment. The use of insulting, disrespectful, demeaning, or disparaging terms to label other people reveals one’s ignorance, intolerance, and misunderstanding. Be conscious of possible negative perceptions of the labels and generalizations you use. Combine specificity with nuance and subtlety to describe people fairly and objectively.
