Mastery is grounded in competence (the capacity to understand and act reasonably), and goal-directed behavior (any activity directed toward conscious or explicitly defined objectives). Mastery is the use of effective coping skills in planning for and responding to influences in the environment, thus enabling self-direction and some predictability.
However, mastery is beyond simple self-balance and mere existence—it enables desired individual growth and development. It is optimal function through optimal self-management.
