Life Skills
Life skills are the abilities to carry out activities of daily living (ADL), such as management and maintenance of one’s health, home, finances, nutrition, hygiene, personal safety, and education. Skills also include the abilities to access social and community services, and to maintain positive social interactions.
When these skills are deficient (usually in a socially isolated, elderly, or disabled person), one is unable to live independently or is at risk of illness, injury, abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Local departments of human or social services can often provide life skills education or services when family or friends are unable to assist.
