Addiction Versus Strengths
Inner strengths can enable you to avoid or recover from self-defeating dependencies on food, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and persons. Strengths against irresponsible, unhealthy, or destructive attachments include delay of gratification, self-regulation, and the ability to foresee such possible consequences as alienation by others, loss of health and means, or life itself.
Get control of your life with professional or group help if necessary. Then consider helping others become aware of their impaired functioning. Explore behavioral possibilities, group support, or therapeutic resources with them. Reinforce their strengths. Assure them of your belief that they are genuinely motivated to change.
Always generously share your wisdom of factors contributing to addiction, the insights and actions needed to break it, and the rewards of an addiction-free life.
